During the Renaissance, tapestry was one of the most expensive artistic products: to have a tapestry room made (a set of several tapestries to dress an entire room) costs ten times more than to paint the walls with frescoes! 
 
For the most precious creations, the weavers mix with wool and silk threads surrounded by gold and silver, which are very difficult to work with. Also, their use can double the time of realization of the tapestry, already usually very long. As for the price of the hanging, it can be multiplied by twenty if metallic threads are used! Unfortunately, many of these tapestries disappeared, especially during the Revolution: they were burnt to recover the precious material.  
 
Some hangings, whose cardboard boxes had been appreciated, were woven several dozen times. The tapestry is a multiple: it is possible to make replicas from the original cardboard. Thus, the tapestry of the Acts of the Apostles, designed by Raphael, was woven at least 55 times between its creation and the end of the 18th century.  
 
Tapestries in the streets! From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, tapestries were used as ephemeral decorations during major festivals. Thus, on the occasion of the marriage of Louis II of Anjou with Yolande of Aragon, in 1400, the Apocalypse hanging was hung in the courtyard of the archbishopric of Arles. In the same way, for the coronation of Louis XV in 1722, the facades of Reims were adorned with hundreds of tapestries from the royal collections and the cathedral treasury.
    
Woven signatures. It is sometimes difficult to determine in which city a tapestry was executed. Workshop marks (often initials), woven into the borders, sometimes help historians to attribute a piece to a particular production centre or manufacture. 
  
Two types of looms are used to make tapestries: the so-called high-sleeve looms and the low-sleeve looms. The technique is very similar, only the orientation of the loom changes: one is vertical, the other horizontal. Once the piece has fallen from the loom, it is almost impossible to distinguish whether the tapestry has been made on a high or low-smooth loom.
