Rare pair of Beauvais tapestries finely woven in wool and silk around 1750.
They have as their register "Cupidon aux Pampres", surrounded by a beautiful flowered border on an old gold background.
This exceptional pair is in its original size.
Cupid corresponds in Greek mythology to Eros, the god of Love. He was the son of Mars and Venus.
It is most often represented by a young child with wings and a bow and sometimes a burning torch or a helmet and a spear and crowned with pink, it is always represented with blue wings. Sometimes he is blind, because Love does not see any defects in the beloved object; sometimes he holds a rose in one hand and a dolphin in the other. It shows itself in the air, in fire, on land and at sea. He drives tanks, or rides lions, panthers and sometimes a dolphin.
