TABRIZ Jafar rug (cotton warp and weft, wool velvet)
This carpet is decorated with several medallions decorated with stylized flowers on a brick background. A navy blue border with floral motifs is framed by numerous counter-edges.
Due to its proximity to Turkish ports, Tebriz significantly developed trade with Europe and thus became a major carpet production centre. From the end of the 18th century, large carpet factories were created there. Tebriz rugs are characterized by high quality and fine knotting and feature a wide variety of decorations: the classic decoration of the central medallion with four spandrels, the vase decoration, the hérati decoration in the open field, figurative or landscape decorations, prayer rugs or garden rugs.
"In fact, there is a very wide variety of Persian rugs:
- The carpets of factories in which the models or boxes are woven several times in the same way; a workshop master or "ustad" directs the work by chanting: "a red knot, a green knot, two blue knots, etc..." It is no longer the creative work of a single craftsman that will spark the spirit of the carpet, but it is the technical prowess of the craftsman, the harmony of the cardboard and colours, the quality of the wool that determine the beauty and success of the carpet. Let us mention the masterpieces of the great masters of the Tabriz region (Djaffer, Hajji Jalil), or of Keschan (Mortashem), Kirman and Isfahan.
- Village workshop carpets (Senneh, Hamadan, Chiraz, Ferrahan...)
- Or weavings from nomadic tribes, such as the Khasgai of the Shiraz region: the weaver creates his own model. (...)
All materials are used throughout Persia: the chains can be made of sheep's wool, goat hair, or even camel hair, cotton, silk. Velvet can be knotted in wool or silk, cotton can also be used to enhance certain patterns."
