History and archaeology have their say on this enigmatic sovereign. Literature and art, both in the West and the East, have seized upon the mystery of the Queen of Sheba, whom the Bible recounts as visiting King Solomon. The Islamic world, following the biblical narrative, has invented a plethora of legends. Ethiopian tradition traces the Solomonic dynasty, which ruled Ethiopia from the beginning of the 1st millennium BCE until the 20th century, directly back to Menelik, the mythical son of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. According to Western and medieval tradition, she was cured of an infirmity when she touched the wood that would be used to fashion Christ's cross. From the dawn of Christianity, theologians expounded upon this more or less legendary woman. She inspired, in the 12th century, sculptors who placed her statue at the entrances of cathedrals in Chartres and Parma.
