The Islamic world, following the biblical narrative, has invented a plethora of legends. Ethiopian tradition traces the Solomonic dynasty, which ruled Ethiopia from the beginning of the 1st millennium BCE until the 20th century, directly back to Menelik, the mythical son of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. According to Western and medieval tradition, she was cured of an infirmity when she touched the wood that would be used to fashion Christ's cross. From the dawn of Christianity, theologians expounded upon this more or less legendary woman. She inspired, in the 12th century, sculptors who placed her statue at the entrances of cathedrals in Chartres and Parma. Accompanied by the Magi, offering gold, frankincense, and myrrh, she served as a motif in the stained glass windows of the cathedrals in Strasbourg and Cologne...
