The battle of the Milvius Bridge between Maxentius and the Augustus of West Constantine took place on October 28, 312 Maxentius. The latter's victory marked the beginning of a new era for the entire Empire. It owes its name to the Milvius bridge over the Tiber, a few kilometres northeast of Rome, which originated in the opposition between the two western Caesars, Constantine and Maxentius. The first, son of Emperor Constance Chlorine, has reigned since his death in 306 in the western provinces of Gaul and Brittany. The second is the son of the Maximian Tetrarch and the son-in-law of Galerius. The two men also have a direct family relationship, since Constantine had been Fausta's sister Fausta's husband since 307, and when Constance died (25 July 306), Constantine's troops proclaimed him Augustus (28 October 306): the title of emperor was not hereditary at that time, however, and it was Maxentius who in Rome had the favours for the succession. He was proclaimed Augustus and rallied all of Italy to his cause, while accusing Constantine of rebellion and parricide. To the east, the other two tetrarchs Licinius and Maximin Daías were opposed to the control of the eastern part of the Empire; when Maximian died in 310 (who committed suicide in Marseille) and Galerius in 311, armed conflict became inevitable between the two emperors.
