DOM ROBERT (GUY DE CHAUNAC LANZAC)- PETIT GALOP DU MATIN
Low smooth tapestry, polychrome wool weaving on cotton
The artist was a monk at the Abbey of En-Calcat in the Tarn. Born Guy de Chaunac-Lanzac, he is known for his fresh nature scenes populated by animals. This tapestry, from the Suzanne Goubely workshop at the Aubusson factory, has kept its original bright colors.
Dom robert was a man of the Church. Spotted by the famous designer Jean Lurçat, (the father of the renewal of tapestry) living in Aubusson in 1940, Dom Robert (1907 -1997), a former art student turned monk, who remained in watercolor in his spare time, had immediate success. .
All his life, he will marry his spiritual and artistic convictions. This cardboard was very successful and was woven several times at the Manufacture Goubely, Aubusson until the early 1970s.
The artist will have spent his Benedictine life drawing and painting what he saw around him: the landscapes of the Black Mountain, which he crisscrossed all day long.
His flowers, trees, and farmyard animals, which he passed along the way, are depicted on the tapestries for which he created the boxes, in layers, as in medieval illuminations. A wonder!
