Aubusson tapestry woven in wool and silk, the washerwomen, 18th century, 1770-1779
The landscape evokes the paintings of Jacques-Nicolas Julliard, in particular "the smallholding by the river", the scene presents a vast hilly landscape: in the foreground on the right, a young shepherd is courting two shepherdesses and washerwomen are busy near of a fountain, inspired by the “noble pastoral” tapestry after François Boucher, woven in Beauvais.
