The Kidnapping of Europe and other scenes
Tapestry of Flanders - Oudenaarde, woven in wool and silk around the second half of the 16th century.
The famous mythological episode recounts the adventures of Jupiter and beautiful Europe. The god took the appearance of a beautiful white bull, so that the young girl would not be suspicious of him. He took it away and carried it across the sea to Crete.
The scene takes place in the centre of the tapestry while, on either side, there are other scenes that are usually found in these 16th century Flemish tapestries: on the left, horsemen and, on the right, a falcon hunt. This "triptych" is very original.
The scene is framed by a large original border decorated with mythological characters under arcades alternating with bouquets of flowers.
