The labors of Hercules were a favorite theme for tapestries. Such series were produced by several manufactures in the former Netherlands. The tapestry presented here was undoubtedly part of a series. The other episodes in this edition have not yet been located.
Hercules had completed his ten "labors" in the space of eight years, but Eurystheus, who had counted neither the second nor the fifth, inflicted two more, although at no point was it said that there were to be twelve.
