Very fine tapestry panel from the very end of the 17th century, woven by the workshops of the Royal Manufacture of Beauvais. This tapestry features the Goddess Artemis (Diana) and the Nymphs, and is part of a series of "small figure" curtains of at least six panels on the theme of Ovid's Metamorphoses. This suite of panels, known as number 178 in the inventory of Royal Garde-Meuble tapestries, was delivered on June 30, 1700 to the Garde-Meuble for use in Madame De MAINTENON's apartment at Château de Marly, and more precisely in the cabinet transformed into a room for Madame De MAINTENON. The composition of the cardboard suggests that it most certainly comes from a work by Philippe BEHAGLE (1641-1705), who was also at that time Director of the Royal Manufacture of Beauvais. The finesse of the execution of the tapestry work makes it possible to better appreciate the details and particularly the meat made by Philippe BEHAGLE himself and by his sons, these being amplified by the presence of silver and gold threads as well as a remarkable freshness of the colours that this tapestry has preserved. A beautiful and wide border, typical of this manufactory, in an olive colour filled with scrolls and flowers in the natural style, with two vases of the same colour supported by claws at the bottom corners, pleasantly enhances the high quality of this tapestry. Wool, Silk, Silver and Gold.
