LOUIS XIV PERIOD BEAUVAIS TAPESTRY, SEA PORTS TENTURE
This tapestry is part of the Ports de mer hanging, 6 pieces, after Adrien CAMPION (painter of the Academy of Saint Luc in 1676), under the direction of Philippe BEHAGLE (1641-1705), and his successor MEROU between 1695 and 1730 in Beauvais, whose animal theme draws its inspiration from the Menagerie of Versailles. It was one of the few to have been acquired by the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne from the Manufacture de Beauvais, for Louis XIV in Marly. A wall hanging was provided to the Royal Court of Sweden in 1695. It is now kept in Burnstop.
In the foreground we see exotic birds and shells; in the background a fortified port and ships in a mountain landscape, all framed by trees and a beautiful border decorated with flower garlands. This tapestry is in these original dimensions.
