Tapestry of Brussels - the Posseidon fountain with Flora
This elegant tapestry was finely woven in wool and silk around 1710 in Brussels, with the fountain of Posseidon and Flora as its register.
Since Neptune's assimilation to Poseidon, the former has inherited most of the attributes of his Greek counterpart. Commonly, we have come to associate the name Neptune with representations that actually have as their object the Greek god Poseidon. However, as is the case with the Roman deities, Neptune did not have an anthropomorphic representation before the Greek influence. This is why very often the imagery corresponding to the god Poseidon is used to represent the Roman deity Neptune. Son of Cronos, brother of Zeus and Hades, Poseidon is one of the twelve great Olympians, and commands the sea and the waters in general.
GREEK POSEIDON AND LATIN NEPTUNE.

Poseidon. - Son of Cronos and Rhée, Poseidon is therefore brother of Zeus and Hades.

When the sovereignty of the heavens, the earth and the underground regions was drawn by lot, the sovereignty of the sea was shared by Poseidon, who took a trident as his emblem. Note, however, that it is as if Poseidon had control over the forces affecting the movement of water, rather than inhabiting the water itself, that he reigns over the wet element. There is a god whose real dwelling is the sea: Nereus, who dwells in the depths of the waves, being opposite Poseidon in the same relationship as Helios, living in the sun, opposite Phoibos, lord of light. The meaning of the name Poseidon, a trait that can shed some light on this obscure name. Poseidon, in the Iliad and in the Odyssey, is represented as equal to Zeus in dignity and inferior to him only in power. He has the power to create, because, according to a story, he is the author of the horse. His name is Gaiêochos, guardian of the earth, and Enesichos, who shakes the world; and finally he disputes with Héré, Hélios and Athéné, the sovereignty of certain Greek cities.

Hence it is not unlikely that this name originally expressed simply the idea of lordship or power, and is not without some connection with words such as "potentate" and "despot", Héré, Zeus' wife, also called Potnia or the powerful. What conduct towards Zeus is Poseidon assigned? He is generally portrayed as faithful and submissive to the ruler of Olympus; but once he plotted (as we said above), with Héré and Pallas Athéné, to put Zeus in the shackles, and was foiled by Thétis (fig. 30). Upon the latter's warning, Zeus placed the Briarea with a hundred arms near his throne, to frighten the conspirators.
servile tasks. But the walls of Troy for Laomedon were built in Poseidon, in concert with Heracles; just as Phoibos Apollo was forced to become a servant in the house of Admet. The reward promised to Poseidon in exchange for this service is the prize that these gods and heroes are usually missing, as well as the sun, that they go to great lengths for the good of man. Laomedo refused to pay the salary offered by him, just as Achilles had to complain about having only the penalties and not the reward of war.
Consequence of this betrayal: Poseidon was on the side of Agamemnon and Menelaus when these warriors came to Troy to take revenge on Paris. Remember (as I said) to Poseidon's credit that he created the horse. In Athens, during a dispute between Athens and himself over the name of the city, Zeus decided that it would be named after the deity who would give humanity the greatest gift. Athena produced the olive tree, and Poseidon and victory was awarded to Athena, the olive being a sign of peace and prosperity, and the horse an emblem of war and evil (fig. 31). But in the Iliad, Achilles tells a completely different story: he tells that Poseidon created the horse in Thessaly, and gave the immortal messengers Xanthos and Balios (the gold and the spotted) to Pelee, the hero's father.
Among the facts related to this god, one cites rivalries other than the one he had with Athens: the legend is that he claimed the sovereignty of Corinth against Helios (the sun), of Naxos against Dionysus, and of Ægine against Zeus himself. Three challenges. What emerges from such accounts is this: originally Poseidon was regarded simply as a regulator or king (fig. 32), and his power, as time went by, was limited to controlling the sea.
Poseidon's wife was Amphitrite, a name that cannot be explained by any word of the Greek language; but in ancient Hindu legends we find a deity, Trita, who rules over the air and water. This name Trita, which some have attached to that of Amphitrite, is still visible in Tritopator, a name for winds; and in Tritogeneia, an epithet applied to Athens, as well as in Triton, son of Poseidon. I finally meet him in the legends of a people other than the Greeks and the Amphitrites and Poseidon, bas-relief.
Hindus: in old Persian stories, the Trita or Traitana of India reappears as Thrætana, the killer of the snake Zohak; this monster responds to the dragon Python killed by Phoibos, and to Fafnir killed by Sigurd.
Poseidon's palace was located in the deep waters near Aegean, on the banks of the Evia; the god kept there his horses with golden manes, responding to the Hindu Harits or sparkling horses of the Sun, which led him with powerful leaps on the sea. Bust of Poseidon or Neptune.

Neptune. - The Romans of an advanced era identified their Neptune with the Greek Poseidon (fig. 34); but by its character, the Latin myth responds more particularly to Nereus. It is the god who dwells on the waters, and his name is related to a number of words that mean swimming or swimming.
