Exceptional and fine tapestry of Brussels woven in wool and silk at the beginning of the XVIIth century.
The Life of Decius Mus is a series of paintings made by Rubens between 1616 and 1618. These paintings were used as cartoons for tapestries woven by the Brussels weavers Jan Raes and Frans Sweerts.
On November 9, 1616, Rubens was contracted by a "nobleman from Genoa" to produce a series of eight cartoons on Decvius Mus to be woven by Jan Raes and Frans Sweerts. The series became a great success in the 17th century and was reproduced by several other studios in various sizes. In 1693, John Adam I of Liechtenstein acquired the original series from Rubens. The works are now in the Liechtenstein Museum.
The series consists of eight cartoons, six of which represent scenes from the story of Decius Mus consul who offered himself to the infernal gods in 340 BC in exchange for Roman victory, and two of which are between-windows depicting female personifications or trophies.
