Pleasures of the countryside.
This beautiful tapestry with the coat of arms of François-Michel Le Tellier, Marquis de Louvois (1641-1691) and his wife, Anne de Souvré, is woven by the lissiers of the Manufacture des Gobelins in the outbuildings of his own mansion. From 1683, this important statesman also became superintendent of the Buildings, Arts and Manufactures of France, on which the Gobelins factory depended. According to the inventories after Louvois' death, this tapestry was part of a hanging with ten episodes illustrating the Pleasures of the Countryside.
The lissiers used a mixture of wool and silk threads. Wool, less expensive, keeps the heat well and is easy to dye. To give a brighter appearance, they used silk for the lighter areas and for the finest details. Silk greatly increases the value of the tapestry.
