The Battle of Gaugamèles took place on October 1, 331 BC. AD It is the decisive confrontation between the army of Alexander the Great and that of Darius III. During this battle, considered one of the most important of Antiquity by the forces involved, the kingdom of Macedonia definitively defeats the Achaemenid empire. This battle is sometimes, somewhat improperly, called battle of Arbèles in reference to the city of Arbèles / Adiabène (Erbil in current Kurdistan), located about 100 km from the battlefield.
Historical context
The Macedonian army landed in Asia Minor in May 334 and defeated the satraps on the banks of the Granicus. In November 333, the Persian army, commanded by Darius himself, was defeated at the Battle of Issus in ancient Cilicia. Alexander then began the conquest of Phenicia and Egypt. Then in spring 331, the Macedonian army marches towards the Euphrates which is crossed, without real opposition, at the end of July.
