Exceptional and rare 17th century tapestry panel, woven with goblins.
This tapestry is part of the fourth low smooth wallpaper woven alone without metal. The panel we present here is for registration on
triumphs over Alexander when he enters Babylon from Charles Le BRUN's painting (1619-1690)
Made in 1665 and currently on display at the Louvres Museum.
It is important to mention that this fourth and final hanging of
11 pieces, was offered by King Louis XIV to Anne Marie Louise D'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier, better known as the "Great Mademoiselle" (1627- 1693). This hanging was delivered in two parts, 1685 and 1686. It should be noted that the tapestries of this hanging have a border with
flowers and fruits, simpler than those of high smooth. And something very particular, the weapons are replaced by a medallion cabochon and at the bottom a central cartridge with the mention :
"SO BY VIRTUE THE HEROES RISE UP
To be highlighted: Original borders and dimensions.
The panel we present here is woven in low smooth, which means that it is not reproduced like the panels in high smooth, but, upside down as if we had for high smooth what we call the
"Part" and in low smooth, the "counterpart". That's why our
tapestry panel is reversed from Charles Le Brun's painting
(1619-1690).
What we know about the Cards about Alexander's Triumph panel:
Mentioned in the 1690 inventory:
For the low smooth " All the paintings of the History of Alexander above
named are painted on the left to be used for the bass lists by the artists of
Bonnemer, Vernansal, Revel and Yvart the son. »
As far as our panel is concerned, as we know it is part of the
Fourth and last hanging implemented, consisting of eleven pieces, of
Private manufacture but undoubtedly woven for the Goblins, it was given by King Louis XIV to Anne Marie Louis d'Orléans, Duchess of Montpensier, better known as the "Great Mademoiselle" (1627-1693). This hanging was delivered to the Garde-meuble on two occasions between 1685 and 1686. As for our panel, it was delivered on February 12, 1685, brought by Sir Jans. Shortly after the second delivery on 9 March 1686, the tapestries were handed over to Vimar, Mademoiselle's caretaker..........
